Why is eLearning faster in Windows?

As a LAMP developer, I came across a class in the local community college (free of course). It was the elearning technology class they offered, so I’d expect it to be run on a Windows server.
However, it’s run on a web server, in a browser.
Am I missing something fundamental?
(I am used to working in Linux, it’s just the new application that is very different).

I don’t know this specific course or instructor, but in general, the way eLearning is delivered is done to save time.
While a class in a physical classroom would require more time to organize, there’s a trade-off in that the instructor could make the class more engaging by discussing all kinds of interesting topics.
In an eLearning course you could just ask a bunch of questions about the material, and the instructor could repeat the same answers over and over, faster.
It really depends on the course. So if an instructor has students who are falling asleep, they can deliver the course very fast.
If it’s a subject that doesn’t lend itself to questions, like statistics, then you’re probably better off with a more traditional course (that is, if you can get it).

A possible reason the instructor may have chosen a non-Windows platform is that the cost of maintenance. Windows requires constant patching and upgrades to keep up with the rapid evolution of new technology and that leaves the instructor and the organization with fewer resources to use on other aspects of the project. I would say that Linux/Unix is the more popular choice for a server platform since it is open-source, so there’s a more powerful community around it and there is more extensive documentation available.
