You follow along with the tutorial, watch the instructor create the image, and then continue editing on your own. Some tutorials offer tips and techniques that help you see how others create their own images, such as the old rule of thirds method of the human form and other helpful tips.
I strongly recommend tutorials because they allow you to see your images in action at each stage. You can see the instructor’s before and after examples and how he or she achieved the desired results. You can do a simple search online, and you can quickly find tutorials for beginners as well as experienced artists who have new tricks.
Best of all, if you create your own online tutorials, you control the outcome. You decide which image appears first and which elements appear in the order that you prefer them.
I also write my own tutorials on my web site, Digital Photography School (`www.digitalphotography-school.com`). Some of my tutorials cover specific areas, such as photographing landscapes, while others cover similar topics but focus on more advanced techniques. My tutorials are on the topics of image composition, Photoshop painting, manipulating and retouching portraits, and more.
I also offer downloadable tutorial CDs. You can search online for my CDs. The two that I offer are listed in the sidebar „The CD is in the mail.“
If you get the CD, the first DVD is a series of tutorials on my work. The second DVD covers all the subjects in the tutorial CDs but also includes a live tutorial based on my most recent product photo. The recordings are all done in HD but have limited sound quality because I’m using a Zoom digital mixer.
The live tutorial is of course much better, but you’ll have to decide whether you’re willing to take the time to download the computer-only version of the tutorials.
