Is there a way to double-click on a directory icon to open a FileDialog?
I’m developing a winforms app, and I have a directory structure that my app will be based on, but I don’t want users to be able to browse the „main“ directory and potentially mess up the app.
Instead I’d like the user to be able to double-click on a folder and then have the program open the appropriate directory.
I can get the directory using the ‚BrowseForFolder‘ method in the ‚Shell.Application‘ object, and I was under the impression that this would cause a file dialog to be displayed.
I haven’t been able to find anything conclusive online or in the MSDN docs, however.

Yes, when you call Shell.BrowseForFolder() you’ll get back a System.Windows.Forms.FolderDialog, so then you just need to double click on that in the FileDialog to open it.
If you need a ‚browse‘ dialog then you’re probably better off using Directory.EnumerateDirectories(). You can then get the selected directory by calling Directory.GetDirectories()
Edit: As Adrián points out, if you’re running.NET 4.0 and up, you can use the FolderPicker control which allows the user to select a single folder. This has a number of benefits, one being that if you want to do your own custom UI then you don’t need to think about opening a dialog.
