For the first time in years, Portland’s gay pride celebrations will have a Latino presence, thanks to three days of festivities planned for Saturday and Sunday in Southeast Portland.
Organizers of the 17th annual Gay Pride Festival, to be held in the parking lot of Fletcher Marketplace, want to pay tribute to the Latino gay and lesbian community in Portland, as well as to honor immigration reform as the country’s political climate changes.
„It’s more important than ever to have Latinos in the parade,“ said April Haynes, a board member of the Gay and Lesbian Latinas of Oregon.
Lately, there’s been a resurgence in the Latino community and many are proud of the changes that have taken place in the Hispanic population over the past decade, Haynes said.
„There are a lot more Latinos who are out of the closet,“ she said.
Haynes said that there is still prejudice against Latinos in America. However, that has not stopped many Latinos from succeeding in a variety of careers. The festival, which will feature music and dancing, will not only have a Latino presence but the theme will be Latino pride.
If Latinos are involved in the parade it will have a historical significance, Haynes said.
Haynes, who is the organizing co-chair, said she was inspired by the recent immigration protests in her home country. She said there’s a lot of Latino pride in her community.
„It’s a Latin city,“ she said. „But it’s not just about the Spanish culture. It’s about the Latin culture and the Latin people that live here.“
Haynes is also the president of National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, which is involved in several projects, including a national conference being held in Portland this month.
Haynes said it’s important to build alliances with communities of color.
„It is important for Latinos to know we have a relationship with other communities,“ she said. „We need to work together to help each other.“
Haynes said the Latino community has many things to celebrate. In addition to being active in the gay community, many Latinos are the first in their family to complete college or graduate school.
