I have implemented Active Directory authentication on a web site. When a user tries to log in to the site I want to prevent automatic logins. There are several reasons for this, primarily to reduce server load and protect the user’s credentials from being stolen if the server is compromised.
When a user logs into the site without entering their credentials I have various options for preventing automatic login.

Increase the timeout interval for user sessions.
Enforce an „is not authenticated“ message for non-logged in users.
Force users to re-authenticate if they attempt to access restricted content.

The problem with option 2 is that it would lead to a poor user experience. Users would be greeted with a login box every time they attempted to access the site. Users would have to click the login button, login, wait while the site authenticates them, then wait while the site logs them out again. This would be a poor user experience and would increase website load.
I would like to reduce the wait time between when the user attempts to access the site and when they are logged in without making it so that it looks slow and bloated.
The options I have not tried yet are:

Implementing a session timeout that expires after a few minutes rather than every time the user tries to log in
Using a cookie to store the user’s credentials when they log in
Requiring the user to re-authenticate when they attempt to
