In 2020, I worked on a new framework in AutoCAD that I think will be useful for a lot of folks. It’s called Scoped Drag & Drop, and you can learn more about it in this blog post. In this post, I’m going to go through the basics of what it does and how it works.
A couple of years ago, I got to thinking about a situation where you have to drag objects from one drawing to another, but you can’t drag them because you have to share a layer with something else. You might have a shape like a gate, and you can’t drag that to a drawing on a different layer because it would collide with a 3D model. Or, you might have some components on a separate layer that you want to drag to the main drawing.
This is a common pain. A quick solution is to use the Layout Editor to place your shapes, and then you can drag them out. But, it’s not a great solution because it means you lose the functionality of your original drawing. And, more importantly, it’s not much better than a simple copy-and-paste.
The solution to this problem is Scoped Drag & Drop. Scoped Drag & Drop lets you drag & drop objects to another object without actually moving the objects to another layer.
What this means in practice is that you can drag objects from one drawing to another on the same layer. When you drop those objects, they will be added to the selected layer automatically.
That’s pretty cool, but why is this helpful? Well, I’ve been using AutoCAD for over 10 years now. And, if you’re familiar with AutoCAD, you’re probably aware that one of the key features of AutoCAD is the ability to quickly draw and modify objects.
