NAIROBI, Kenya, 6 Dec 2012 (IPS) – Kenya is one of the countries where the outlook of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is the most positive, according to a newly released report by a leading Kenyan think tank, the Centre for Africa Studies (CAS).

The study, entitled “The macro-economic profiles of the East African (EA) region”, was published Tuesday by CAS. It provides a profile of the economic and political state of Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Eritrea and Ethiopia.

“This region is described as the ‘New East Africa’, and its high population growth rate is a key attraction for investors and businesses. These countries have witnessed tremendous growth in the last five years, which has been well-received by the region’s citizens. Investment has exceeded 30 per cent of GDP, with a number of new private sector mega projects which have helped generate more than three million jobs,” said Gert Bulyke, the author of the study.

In the report, CAS defines the East African region as “a group of six East African nations and one non-member (Ethiopia) that share a common land border, culture, history and language. The East African region has been opened up and its people are developing rapidly in a manner similar to many middle-income developing countries. All six countries now have middle-income economies and are classified as ‘lower middle-income’.”

In 2010, the region had a per-capita income of nearly US$3,000, which represents a 20.1 per cent increase since 2000. The region’s economy grew by 3.4 per cent in 2010, while population grew by an average of 2.4 per cent over the same period.

“The region’s population size is almost double what it was in 2000, and continuing population growth, along with migration, means that the population of the region will grow by more than 50 per cent by 2050,” said the report. “The region’s population will make it one of the world’s fastest growing regions by 2050.”
