This article outlines the history of the arts in Great Britain and the scope of the contributions to them from voluntary organizations such as the National Gallery, Tate Britain, and the National Portrait Gallery.

After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, the collection of Henry VIII came into the ownership of the crown; artworks became a part of Crown assets. After the English Civil War, during the Commonwealth of England, artworks were still owned by the crown, but not given to any public institutions, such as the National Gallery. After the Restoration in 1660, patrons of the arts sought to promote the arts as a mark of status, placing works in their homes or other prestige locations.

The formation of charitable trusts such as the British Museum by Sir Hans Sloane in 1753 was one way to gain prestige, and the first endowment of a public museum was found in 1757 by the Corporation of London, but major grants were not made until the end of the 19th century, when grants were made to the National Gallery (1890–1891), and the Tate Gallery (1899–1901). These two are only two of the many organisations which have played a part in the fundraising for the arts.

Development of the arts

Medieval
The first monasteries to be dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536 were those of the City of London and Westminster, and the Abbey of St Peter and St Paul in Cornhill. A few of the artworks in these monasteries came into the possession of the crown, and were mainly bought by Elizabeth I and conveyed to the newly formed British Museum (Natural History).

Artworks were highly sought after by wealthy collectors, and were not generally available for the public.

Renaissance and Baroque
In the Renaissance, the patronage of the arts flourished. The noble families of England and their many country houses were patrons, and their patronage helped to create a wider audience.
