Pestana CR7, Cristiano Ronaldo’s hotel in Marrakesh, Morocco, is reportedly a place for earthquake survivors in that country. The 174-room hotel owned by the Portuguese star became a refuge for victims of the Moroccan earthquake that rocked on Friday (8/9/2023).
According to dailytrust, the earthquake that hit the North African country was reported to have killed more than 2,000 people and injured more than 1,200 people. The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck 72 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of the tourist hub of Marrakesh, wiping out entire villages in the hills of the Atlas mountains.
As a result, people fled to any building to seek shelter after the natural disaster, including Ronaldo’s hotel. However, apparently this rumor has been denied by the hotel management.
Initially, news that footballer Ronaldo’s hotel was one of the places to evacuate earthquake victims was revealed by Spanish sports media, Marca. Check out the complete review reported by Liputan6.com below from various sources, Tuesday (12/09/2023).
The news started from an interview with a tourist
The news that footballer Ronaldo’s hotel was one of the evacuation places for earthquake victims was revealed by Spanish sports media, Marca.
According to dailytrust, a Spanish citizen, Irene Seixas, on Sunday (click here) said: „The hotels are the same. We had to come to the new area of Marrakesh, where there are more luxury hotels. Now we managed to get the Cristiano Ronaldo hotel which is located on the outskirts to give us a room.“
He added, „We waited. We slept all night on the street and at seven in the morning they told us that yes, we could come in. We were in the lobby with lots of people from different countries, waiting to see if we could get a room, but we all sleeping on the street.“
The Moroccan government has warned everyone not to stay inside buildings, fearing severe aftershocks.
Has been denied by hotel management
After reports from various news outlets such as Marca claimed that football legend Cristiano Ronaldo’s hotel was turned into a shelter for earthquake victims in Morocco, the hotel management reportedly denied the reports.
According to Morocco World News, because the Pestana CR7 hotel was not affected by the major earthquake that hit Marrakech on September 8, hotel management told Israeli news outlet Ynet News that they received several requests to accommodate guests.
The hotel’s operations manager expressed surprise at the claims, especially those appearing in Spanish publication Marca, and indicated that they had received a large number of inquiries.
„It is not appropriate to say that we accommodate refugees and victims,“ said the hotel management, as reported by Liputan6.com from Morocco World News, Tuesday (12/9).
Via Goal.com, in a statement to Liberation, a spokesperson for the Pestana hotel said, „This is false information. All the customers we have at the moment have made reservations normally.“
The hotel may have some homeless people hanging out in the lobby, or someone may have seen them walking around outside. However, Ronaldo’s hotel stressed that „it is not a refuge for refugees.“
