% of stockholders in General Packet Radio Service Ltd., and the holding company, Cellular Communications Inc. (CMI). Iruka is regarded as having gained control of CMI from Howard Hughes in 2000. In 2002, Hughes sold off his majority shareholding in CMI to Iruka, in the process leaving Iruka the majority shareholder of General Packet Radio Service Ltd. Iruka became the company’s chief executive.

In December 2007, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined Iruka $US9,800 for failing to notify the Commission of his ownership in another mobile phone company—AuraNet Wireless Inc. Iruka was also fined $US2500 for providing false and misleading responses to the FCC during its investigation. He was fined another $US2500 for failing to disclose that GPRS was owned by CMI, and another $US2500 for „diverting“ $US5000 to an account that did not belong to him. In January 2008, Iruka sold his shares in GPRS to another company.

According to a 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation interview, Iruka and his wife invested US$100 million in IaruNet which was later sold to Telstra for US$5.7 billion.

Iruka was expected to be among the nominees for the new World Bank president when the election was held on 20 May 2009. However, on 15 June 2009, the World Bank announced the appointment of Robert Zoellick as its new president.

On 13 December 2011 Iruka endorsed Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory to the Darwin Day event. Iruka told the news agency IANS (India Abroad Service), ‚“In a democratic country you have to respect other people’s opinions. But mine is different… I believe in the theory of evolution.'“ He was speaking at a Darwin Day event organised by the Darwin Centre of the St. Andrew’s College, Chennai where he was the chief guest.

On 25 September 2012, it was announced that he had been appointed Chairman of the Pequea Valley Ski Club. Iruka is an enthusiastic skier and was the first Chairman of the PVSCC to visit a ski resort in Russia. He donated US$100,000 to help build a new four-sided bell-shaped helipad at the PVSCC’s ground-breaking Jack Frost event on the grounds of the Club.
