If you have followed the news about the Atelier games you will know that the western release has been badly delayed. In fact it has been delayed so long that they’ve had to start over. You have heard of the new game, Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings DX?
The game is a 2D action experience with a love story and it centers on two girl Alchemists. You play as Lydie, the Alchemist of Collapsed Night, and Suelle, a young girl that resides in the Dusk Ruins and goes on a journey with you.
I played some of the demo to get acquainted with the game and spoke to Tatsuya Akashi, Director of Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings DX to get a view from the official release.
LIONARDO: First of all, give us a summary of what Atelier Lydie and Suelle represents.
TATSUYA AKASHI: Lydie & Suelle are a pair of Alchemists. They work in the city Collapsed Night. Suelle is an ordinary country girl and Lydie is a withdrawn and fantasy-obsessed young lady. One day Suelle comes across Lydie by accident, but she is shocked to learn that she was the owner of a large painting. Lydie invites Suelle to live with her in Collapsed Night and the two of them start to craft potions together.
LIONARDO: What were the inspirations for Lydie and Suelle?
TATSUYA AKASHI: The Alchemists of Atelier are very sensitive. Their skills are inherited from their parents and if they weren’t good, they’d die. I think they’re shy and quiet and
TATSUYA AKASHI: That’s for any kind of Alchemists. Everyone has their own hobbies. Lydie and Suelle have their own approaches. Suelle often embroider handkerchiefs. I think the embroidery she does has a surprising quality. When you show someone her handiwork, it gives a feeling of the things that she can do. Lydie is the kind who collects things.
