New features are not always introduced with a new version number.“
The new version numbering system is a major change in AutoCAD. Before the introduction of this version numbering system, new version numbers were identified by a sub-letter. For example, AutoCAD 2010 was identified as „AutoCAD 2009 (sub-letter S).“
AutoCAD 2016 was released in May 2016. Up until that time, it was known as AutoCAD 2016.1.
The Beta Version
In February 2016, Autodesk released an AutoCAD beta version. This version was free to download and also free to use. Although it was intended to be a bug-fixing version, most of its updates were either minor or the new features that did arrive were improvements over the stable release version. For example, the beta version included a revised version of the design kernel.
Autodesk claims that a beta version will „let you test out a public beta release of AutoCAD. If a fix is found that is vital to you, you can go back to the original released AutoCAD release, but you must do so within a reasonable time frame.“
