    What is GRACE?
    We seek to embody the thought, „yes, they are human beings. How can we include all those people?“ in order to create a game that is accessible to the player. We try to receive input from all the people who play our games, and if possible, try to address the issues that arise from it. We want to create games that will allow you to experience characters, emotions, and stories while spending time with your friends. To us, that is GRACE.
    ORIGINAL GRAPHICS
    We began development on the game using a new system, „the international style,“ and used a realistic anime style for the graphics. However, because we wanted it to have a more traditional Japanese design, we redesigned the graphics after the first version was finished. At the time, the art was already completed.
    RUNNING GAME SYSTEM
    We wanted to create a style that emulated the feel of a traditional RPG, and so we decided to use the highly modified First Runner as the core of the game. Using the First Runner, we developed the engine, which provided a comprehensive network connection and management for other applications, and a viewer to demonstrate other applications within the game. We chose OpenGL for the graphics rendering, and we decided on a simple physics engine to handle various motions. The result was an incredibly immersive and realistic game.
    CHARACTER CREATION
    On top of the game engine, we added various character creation features that would be familiar to Japanese RPG fans. We kept as much information as possible in the graphics, including gender, hair color, facial features, and body shape. To create a massive amount of variations, we created a variety of options for every possible combination. The feature set is extremely complex, but there is also a lot of freedom. You can, for example, create a character from scratch, or combine information from different sources and create an entirely new character design.
    WRITER
    I was in charge of the writing and planning for the game. The setting was the „Lands Between,“ a mythical place that connects all of reality. When designing the game setting, I planned to appeal to the anime fans who had already been converted by Working!!, and to the RPG fans who enjoy traditional, mythical Japanese settings. I aimed for the medium between the two, and created a fantasy world that was bizarre yet realistic.
