To work with an image, first activate the Photoshop image-editing window by selecting Edit Edit in Photoshop CS6 (Figure 5-1). Then double-click the image to open it in the Editor. Or you can use the File Open dialog box to open the image directly from your computer’s disk. Figure 5-2 shows the default properties of a new image. When you open an image, it appears in the Editor with default settings for the type and size of the image. In addition, it will appear in the Open dialog box with a little screencap thumbnail image of your image.
Image Size and Resolution
You can use most any size of an image in your image-editing work, but you can generally achieve better results when your images are at least 600 x 600 pixels. If you want to increase the file size of your image, the most efficient way to do so is to decrease the size of your image so that it’s 600 x 600 pixels. The fastest way to reduce the size of a file is to set your image’s display size (in pixels) to 300. In the Size property of the Size and Position dialog box shown in Figure 5-2, you can see that I set the image to display at 300 pixels wide and change the height to 600 pixels.

File Size and Resolution
In addition to resizing an image, you can also decrease the size of your files by scaling an image. When you scale an image, you move the image boundaries into new positions and thereby increase the image size. Scaling an image can make it more convenient to store or send your images across a network.
If you scale an image, you may need to extend the image by increasing the file size. The most efficient way to scale an image is to scale it at 600 pixels and then set the display size at 300 pixels. In addition, you can choose to scale the image horizontally or vertically.
Working with Layers and Selection Layers
Photoshop enables you to add to an image as many layers as you need to create a more complex image. Layers are, in effect, logical containers that organize objects in an image.

Getting started
Photoshop Elements is easy to install on Windows operating systems. The software can be downloaded at Adobe.com for a free trial or purchase from amazon.
Find file extensions
You can search using autocomplete to find the file extension of your pictures. For example, type ‘.jpg’ in the autocomplete box, press ‘tab’ key, press ‘enter’ key to find the extension. You can search for other file extensions with the same method.
Launch Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements comes pre-installed in a lot of Windows operating systems. Open the window of Photoshop Elements by double-clicking the program’s icon from the All Programs folder. It should automatically open and start the software. If Photoshop Elements window doesn’t open, reboot the computer.
Like Photoshop, Photoshop Elements has a File menu and an Edit menu. The File menu contains Save, Open and Save As. The Edit menu lets you crop, resize, sharpen, watermark, layers, paint, remove spots and apply filters. You can also find a Paintbrush tool and a Type tool.
The following figure shows the Photoshop Elements window.
Alternatively, you can navigate through all the features of the software by using the help icon in the top bar. Open Help from the Edit menu, select View Help (or press Ctrl+F1) to display a tutorial on how to use Photoshop Elements. When you finish the tutorial, you’ll see a message saying that you are finished.
Open pictures in Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements comes pre-installed with a New option on the Edit menu. Select New to open the software’s Insert menu. Use this to add files or folders to the software.
New is not the only function available on the Insert menu. You can find all the other options from this menu, including Trim, Rotate, Autorotate, crop, resize, mirror, recolor and few other options. The following figure shows the Photo menu that contains the Insert and Auto modes.

1. Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to microelectromechanical (MEMs) interferometric modulators.
2. Description of the Related Art
Microelectromechanical (MEMs) systems or devices generally include mechanical components (e.g., hinges, springs, and air gaps) that are manufactured using semiconductor process technology. Such devices are generally silicon based and are referred to as silicon-based MEMs (SMEMs). The SMEMs are being used in a variety of applications including optical displays, optical communication devices, optical computing devices, and so on.
Fabrication of MEMs devices often involves techniques used in semiconductor processing. For example, thin films of piezoelectric, magnetostrictive, or electrostrictive materials are deposited on a substrate. Subsequently, the substrate is heated to cause a phase transition in the deposited films and, thus, to form the desired mechanical components on the substrate. The phase transition generally is a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition.
Such MEMs devices are typically fabricated from thin films formed on a substrate. The substrate is typically a glass plate, such as a borosilicate glass plate, and the thin films are formed from materials (e.g., Al2O3, ZnO, and SiO2) that are compatible with the substrate.
Recently, a MEMs device having an interferometric modulator has been proposed. The interferometric modulator uses an active, reversible phase transition to act as a switch for a modulating light signal. For example, the active phase transition is a reversible phase transition from a crystalline state to an amorphous state. Such a transition occurs when a threshold amount of an electrical field is applied to the active material. Consequently, application of a relatively small electrical field is required to cause the active material to change state. However, the MEMs device using the active, reversible phase transition may require additional actuation electrodes and drive electronics which may increase the size of the MEMs device.

North Korea says it has conducted a „perfect“ test-firing of a powerful intercontinental ballistic missile.
The launch, from the country’s east coast, was carried out on the anniversary of the birth of the „eternal“ leader, Kim Jong-un.
The North’s KCNA news agency said the „the Hwasong-14“ missile had reached an altitude of 2,802km (1,735 miles).
The test follows a year of international condemnation over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programmes.
Pyongyang’s claim of a successful missile test has been previously disputed by international experts.
‚Perfect test‘
While North Korea said it was ready to deploy the weapons in any part of the world, the BBC’s David Lee and Hyonhee Shin in Seoul say there is no reason to believe that it has mastered this type of missile.
North Korean KCNA said the test launch was carried out from Tongchang-ri on the north-east coast of the country.
Analysis A successful missile launch is a propaganda coup for the regime but most people say the test launch was of a relatively short-range missile that wouldn’t even get beyond the border with Japan. The regime is playing down the North’s recent progress in its missile and nuclear programmes but this latest test could be interpreted as a sign that Pyongyang is serious about securing leverage ahead of planned negotiations next year. The question is whether the world should believe the North’s desire for a deal is genuine. Time will tell, but given the regime’s obsession with the cult of its leader, it’s hard to believe Pyongyang is ready to end its nuclear programmes just yet.
There are no visible signs that the missile has been successfully recovered after its launch, with KCNA citing the North as saying the launch has hit its target in „a perfect manner“.
The launch took place on the 72nd birthday of Kim Jong-un and just a few months before the end of the year.
Meanwhile South Korean defence officials have told the BBC they are ready to support any military action to stop the North’s weapons programme, if Pyongyang decides to use its nuclear weapons.
The South Korean officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, also indicated that they would not be surprised if the North deployed nuclear weapons, making it clear that they are „ready for
