While a number of tools for professional postproduction are available, it is important to realize that many tasks for the beginner can be achieved with free software such as GIMP (see the section, „GIMP: Free Graphics for all“).
Photoshop isn’t a replacement for professional-quality photo-editing software or for software editing by the pros. It’s too much of a beast for most uses. However, for beginning and intermediate photographers, Photoshop may be the right tool for the job.
Photoshop works best on graphics files (rather than photographs) with bitmaps and transparency rather than by using pixels. The idea behind a pixel-based system is that it uses colorless pixels to create an image. When a person looks at an image, he sees the color he expects to see, not the color or hue of the pixels.

The advantage of layers is that you can easily move and combine layers with a cut and paste technique. Although you may have little experience with this kind of image manipulation, Photoshop is a tool you should master.
Using Photoshop
If you’ve never opened an image in Photoshop, you may be amazed how few options you’ll see. From the time you load an image onto your computer, Photoshop begins analyzing and optimizing it — and it’s doing so every time you open a file. The simple process begins with the Preview window (refer to Figure 14-5).
Follow these steps to open an image in Photoshop (and the ones you’ll also use in GIMP):
1. Open an image.
You’ll find images in your digital camera’s card slot, on a memory card, on a computer’s hard drive, and in the cloud on a website like Flickr.
2. Maximize the Preview window.
The Preview window shows you the image on your computer. In the panel along the bottom of the window, you see a preview of the image.
3. Maximize the Photoshop window.

Choose File > New from the top menu bar or press Command+N on the keyboard to create a new document. You’ll find the New dialog box under the File menu.
The New dialog box will look like this:
Give your document a suitable name. Save the document as a JPEG image using the file name that you’ve chosen.
You can also use Photoshop’s Share option to create a web link to your document.

This is the first step in editing and retouching your image in Photoshop.
The document’s name should include the name of your photo and the name of your Photoshop file. For example, if your photo is “Fred and Buster the cat” then your file name should be “Fred and Buster the cat [1].jpeg”.
Remember to include the file extension, so the full filename should be “Fred and Buster the cat [1].jpeg”.
Save your document in the format that you wish to use – a JPEG is the most popular choice. However, you can save it as a PSD file if you prefer.
When you save the file, Photoshop adds file extension information to the file name. The file extension is a word that lets the browser know what type of file the image is. For example, a file extension called.psd is for a Photoshop document.
