## Introduction to Photoshop

To start using Photoshop you’ll first need to open your image in Photoshop by double-clicking on the file on your hard drive. To adjust the picture, simply double-click on an area of your image and make your adjustments. You’ll then need to save the image. When you’re ready to print the image, you’ll need to zoom in on it and make any final adjustments to the picture.

You’ll see a preview of your new image on the menu bar at the top. At this point, you should click **File**. This will open the File menu where you can adjust your chosen settings. In this chapter I’ll walk you through the basics of the File menu and give you a basic grounding in the menu system.

It’s also possible to save your image to the File menu. This is the most common file type. Alternatively, you can choose to save it to your hard drive in a new folder using the **Save** menu option, called Save for Web & Devices, as shown in Figure 10-1. If you click on the **Save** menu option and select **Save for Web & Devices** from the drop-down list, Photoshop will save your file as a JPEG, and you may also want to tell it to make the file smaller.

You can also make a copy of your image using the **File** menu or **File** | **Save As**. To create a copy, click on the **Save As** menu option and choose from the drop-down list the type of file you’d like to create ( **JPEG**, **BMP**, **GIF**, or **TIFF** ). The most common choices are GIF and TIFF, so unless you are specifically creating an animation from a GIF or need a specific image type, you will probably stick with JPEG.

## The File Menu

The File menu provides the basic controls for Photoshop. Figure 10-2 shows the main options available, although there are many more options. Simply use the Index to find the correct menu option you need. The bottom section of the File menu provides options for **File**, **Edit

Can I use a trick of two filters for compensating color channels of one depth image?

I have two 3-channel images (RGB) with the same depth (no alpha channel) and are exactly the same. I want to use them to compensate color channels of each other (that is, to find the red and blue vectors of one image and the green and yellow ones of another image). I do it like this:

first I find the mean R, G, B per channel for both images
I apply a gaussian blur (sigma=3) to the first image
I apply the first filter to the blurred one
I apply the second filter (same sigma as the first one) to the same image
I take the mean from the first image and the intensity from the blurred one (in this moment the values of all three channels of the blurred image are equal to zero)

I’m not sure about the last step. What I expect is that I will get the same RGB vectors for both images (where one is the original one and the other one is the blurred one).

You want to use two Gaussian filters to expand the image. First the initial image is blurred, than another blurred image is added. Thus the blurred image will be a mixture of the initial image and the blurring image. The noise should be uniform and the blurring can be set to the value for which you want to simulate a motion blur.
The result of the filters and the addition of the blurred image with the initial image is what you want.
