Use Monitoring Tools

Some of the biggest problems with locking are caused by the lack of attention paid to monitoring. When using a lock, you need to make sure no threads are waiting for your lock because they are blocked in other places. If a thread is waiting in your lock, your thread will be blocked (as will the other thread).

A monitor is a tool to help you watch for these problems. Because a monitor is more complex than a lock, the developers of C++11 chose to provide the new `Monitor` template that allows you to express the problem a bit differently. Unfortunately, the old way of writing locks—using the lock keyword—does not easily adapt to `Monitor` (because the keyword only communicates that a synchronization operation is needed).

The recommended way of using a `Monitor` is shown in Figure 17-9.

You create a monitor object and pass it to the function that needs the synchronization. When the function calls a method that acquires or releases the monitor, the monitor object can notify any threads waiting on it. If a thread’s call to a synchronized method is blocked by the monitor, the thread is unblocked, and the monitor’s `notify` method is called on the threads that are waiting on it.

The monitor is perfect for situations where you need to watch for a group of methods. When you need to monitor a single method that could be called by multiple threads, you can create a lock and use that to handle the synchronization.
